Welcome, All!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   I realize that many of you are waiting for your books to arrive in the mail. Please don't be anxious - I posted some great articles (see links starting with "MAJOR FIGURES OF CRITICAL PEDAGOGY" in the column to the right) for us to read the first week. Hopefully most of your books will arrive by the second week. If possible, you might want to Express Mail the Nicholas Paley book, Finding Art's Place, since that is the first book we'll read.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        In the meantime, we can introduce ourselves. Tell us where you are in the MAE program (for instance, if it's your first semester or if you plan to graduate within a year), where you live, why you decided to enter the MAE program at Texas Tech and what you hope to achieve. If you're comfortable with telling us your current occupation, please feel free to do so. If you're a practicing artist, which I believe most of you are, you can tell us about that too. If you're really gregarious you can tell us about your family, your pets, your general age range (whether you remember the JFK assassination or think Madonna is Lady Gaga's grandma) and where you grew up. Whatever is important for us to know about you.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Let me know if you encounter any difficulties accessing the syllabus or navigating the blog. I know that for some (if not most) of you, distance learning is a new experience. You will catch on quickly. The best thing about online learning is that it forces us to practice our writing skills. If you are a teacher in the U.S. today, you know that almost everybody needs to work on their writing. Online learning provides us with an opportunity to articulate our ideas in writing - statements that can be saved for later use in a research paper or even a thesis.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             So before we start reading about some of the major figures of critical pedagogy, let's take time to say who we are and get to know each other. If you want to post a picture, just email it to me and I will put it on the blog.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    If you have any special needs or concerns that you'd like me to know about but otherwise remain confidential, you can ALWAYS email me at -  c.erler@ttu.edu   - I am here to help and serve YOU.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Once again, welcome to the class. I look forward to a great semester!                                                                   -                                                                                                                                                                      carolyn / Dr. Erler (call me carolyn)

  1. Hi Carolyn....and fellow students!

Wow! What a whirlwind Summer! My Junction experience leaves me forever changed. I have to admit though, that as much I loved the experience, it is great to be back at work and into my normal routine.

I'm an artist, a teacher, a student, a production designer, a business owner, a wife, a mother, and some other things people have called me that I won't repeat. I live in San Antonio, but am from Baltimore originally, so I still have an east coast soul. I am finishing my first year of this program, and I am enjoying the journey. I like candor and dislike politics, both of which get me into trouble from time to time. I'm generation "X"; I watched the first moon landing as a toddler, saw the Clash at CBGB's in the Village in college, sold cell phones when they cost $4k, and now go kicking and screaming into middle age. I teach glass technique to adults as an adjunct instructor at SWA here in SA, but I also have a studio here where we teach classes in glass and metal arts. I also do guest instructor stints around the country at various places.

Books ordered, ready to learn from you all!

  2. Thanks, Gail! You gave me an idea... We can say what our first rock concert was. I can say that my first concert was Aerosmith at the Toledo Sports Arena. I wasn't even 16 because I remember my parents drove me & my little burn-out friends in their station wagon to and from the concert. Those were the days when parents left their under-age kids to their own devices. It was great. "Dream On" had just topped the charts.

  3. Oh my gosh, I just looked up when "Dream On" hit the charts and it was 1973. "Me & my little burn-out friends" were 13!!!

  4. Hi everyone!! Just got home from my first day of classes today! I'm super exhausted! My name is Ana Harvey and I am a teacher and a basketball coach at a public high school in San Antonio. My very first concert was New Kids on the Block, but I too young to really remember much about it. My most recent concert was Iron Maiden a few weeks ago...they put on such a great show. I'm crazy about my dogs (two Huskies, a pit bull mix and a medium sized mutt. I'm also known as the teacher to bring all the stray puppies to at school. That's where I got my pit bull and mutt from! Looking forward to the class!!!

  5. Hi Ana, So good to hear from you! Thank you for introducing yourself to the class. I'm not sure where everybody else is, but we'll probably hear from them soon. You brought up a topic that is sure to please at least two other people in the class - dogs. I think it's wonderful that you have made yourself to go-to person at your school for stray pups. It's an excellent way to demonstrate empathy and kindness toward our fellow creatures on this earth. Many kids aren't exposed to this at home, so (I believe) it needs to be taught.

  6. Hello all,
Hurray for Saturday mornings and time just to sit with good coffee. The first week of teaching has kept me busy and tired. Seven classes a day this year! I teach high school art in Lubbock, 16 years this year. In addition, I am a wife, a painter, mostly - , a musician, a lover of all things French. This is my second course in the MAE program after a fabulous seminar in Junction this summer - mind broadening! I have been married 40 years this year, kids all grown and gone. We live in the country, far from neighbors and sound, and treasure the silence! I have one dog child - Jackson, a 42 lb 1/2 border collie, who resents my lap top! I well remember the day JFK was shot and the first concert I attended was unbelievably enough, The Righteous Brothers, in Abilene, TX. Four friends and I drove 40 miles in a 1965 yellow Impala convertible to see them... Man am I old! Have read the articles - getting dictionary paper cuts! Hi, Gail - nice to see you again! Jennifer

  8. Hello,

Sorry I am late to the party :(
My name is Daniel and I live and work in Lubbock, Tx. I teach at Coronado High School and handle intro Art and the 2-D advanced Art classes such as Drawing, Painting, and AP Portfolio. I entered the MAE program to gain an edge in the very competitive Museum Education field. My goal is to obtain a position at a major Texas Art Museum or collection as a Education cordinator / facilitator. I also have an interest in Museum Science and plan to get a minor in the field.

I just got married this summer to my lovely wife, who is also a teacher here in Lubbock. She teachs Biology to freshman, brave soul. We have two amazing dogs that I couldn't live without. I do a bit of painting in my free time and I work a second job on the weekends to pay down debt.

I love to hunt/fish, camp, hike, anything outside really. I am also training for a half marrathon thanks to the influence of a fellow MAE student I had the pleasure of meeting in Junction this past summer. I am looking forward to reading everyones opinions on the various matters and topics this semester!

    Also, Hi Anna!!!
